Your childhood memories are a rich landscape where the characters from your reality and the creatures of play and make-believe often intermix. Imagination is a potent force in the learning process of any child. We learn about danger. Don’t put your hand on the hot plate, don’t play in traffic, don’t run with scissors. Don’t speak to strangers. That sort of thing. Your survival instinct is running on full speed, making you afraid of imaginary beasts in the closet, under the bed, in the dark behind that pitch black windowpane. Childhood is the time of night terrors. But through it all most of us are fortunate enough to enjoy the absolute trust that nothing can hurt us under the protection of our parents. There is nothing these demi-gods, the adults, can’t fix. 

 

What happens when that illusion breaks? When you start recognizing their flaws. When you realise that there are things that your family can’t protect you from. The transition between childhood and adulthood is rocky at best, for some of us it is a true nightmare, and although the way of the typical teenager is to push for independence from their parents: this might be a time when the safety of the family bond is essential.
